1: How is a helmet supposed to fit my head?
All helmets should feel snug without feeling tight. Ideally, the helmet should feel equally secure and snug around your head without feeling tight at any particular point.
To determine the proper size of your helmet measure the circumference of your head an inch above your eyebrows and ears. For guidance use the chart below to properly size your helmet.
Note: Everyone’s head is shaped differently, so be sure to test the helmet with different padding. Ultimately, you should determine the size and proper padding based on the snug feeling and experience that you will gain over time.
Remember: All riding gear (helmets, gloves, protective suits, etc) will only ensure safety if properly sized.
2: What is the weight of PHX helmets compared to others?
At PHX we pride ourselves on making light-weight helmets that offer greater protection than the competition’s. Because helmets are built according to stringent, global standards regarding the component materials, most helmets in the market are of similar weights. For the past decade, helmets bearing the PHOENIX (PHX) name have been recognized as amongst the lightest helmets by class in the North American and European markets.
Given the high-level of consistency in our manufacturing processes the differentials in weight between our individual helmets within each model type are negligible. Of course helmet weights will vary between helmet types; a full face helmet, for example, will weigh more than an open face helmet.
3: Can I get replacement parts and accessories for my helmet if I need them?

4: How do I remove the headliner and cheek pads?
Carefully place helmet upside-down on a clean cloth or towel to prevent scratching. Beginning on one side pull each snap outward, one-by-one. Once completed on one side, repeat on the other. To re-install, attach the snaps one-by-one in reverse order
5: Do the replacement shields offer UV protection?
PHX shields do offer protection against UVA and UVB rays. Indeed, the very nature of a visor or face-shield filters out some of the sun’s harmful rays. Our advanced visor production methods and materials research have given the PHX full face and Modular helmet lines a leading reputation for visor quality, clarity and safety. Additionally, we comply with all regulations regarding penetration resistance and shatter-proofing eye protection.
6: Are PHX shields anti-fog?
Anti-fog shields are available throughout distribution centers and dealer locations globally. Please contact your local North American dealer for more details.
7: What helmet parts do you have that are available?
We have a complete assortment of helmet parts and sub-components. For specific years and model details please contact your local dealer. Most PHX modular helmets will come standard with a replacement component kit as part of the PHX commitment to exceeding market expectations.
8: Can we touch up the paint?
No. This could affect the helmet’s safety performance if improper paints are used. To avoid premature aging, cracking or other damage to the helmet either leave the helmet as is, or contact your local dealer for re-finishing work or product replacement options. If the helmet is badly scratched or compromised in any way you should replace it as your safety is compromised and your helmet is no longer compliant with national safety standard.
9: What are the helmet certifications required in North America
The United States helmet safety standard is issued by the U.S. Department Of Transportation (DOT). Helmets in compliance with this safety standard are assigned a symbol at the base and rear of each helmet.
The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) no longer tests motorcycle helmets. Canadian helmet safety standards are now based exclusively on the DOT standard.
Mexico has no official helmet manufacturing standard but manufacturers and riders commonly use the DOT standards as a basis for quality.
10: What are the SNELL and DOT standards?
Department of Transportation (DOT) helmet certification:
The US Government sets minimum standards for motorcycle helmet safety through the Department of Transportation (DOT). The standard is Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 (FMVSS 218) and is known commonly as the DOT standard.
SNELL Certification:
The Snell Memorial Foundation is a private, non-profit organization that sets voluntary standards for motorcycle, bicycle and auto racing helmets. SNELL standards are universally recognized as the world’s toughest and most demanding. These standards also help inform legal standards as they are set in the European Union.

11: How should I clean my helmet?
Taking care of your helmet is a simple process that can help prolong the life of your helmet. However, it is crucial that you never use a strong cleaner or chemicals on your helmet: this could cause the helmet to corrode and thus compromise your safety.
We recommend that you clean the helmet’s exterior with a mild soap and water. Make sure to rinse it and dry it thoroughly. Never immerse the helmet in water.
To wash the inside of the helmet use either a mild soap or shampoo and then leave it to dry for a day or two. We further recommend that you leave it to dry on an absorptive towel during this time.
The visors are easy to clean with a damp cloth and/or mild soap. However, if the visor becomes irreversibly dirty or scratched you should replace it.
When it is clean you should always store your helmet in a helmet bag that will keep it safe from unnecessary wear and tear.
12: When should I replace my helmet?
If you have been in a crash with your helmet, replace it immediately! All helmets are designed to absorb the shock from an impact, but even if the exterior of the helmet appears undamaged after a crash there is almost certainly damage in interior.
Indeed, most of the helmet’s protective qualities are beneath the surface – so don’t be fooled by its appearance. If you have dropped your helmet and think that it may be damaged, take it to your local dealer for inspection.
Equally important to the shell's integrity is the chinstrap. If it frays or loosens take it in for replacement at your local dealer. However, if the helmet is reaching its 4 or 5 year mark you should consider replacing it – our research team is constantly upgrading our technological safety measures, improvements that you won’t want to miss out on.
Indeed, even without any crash or incident most helmets need to be replaced every three to five years. The actual life of a helmet depends on many factors such as the frequency of use and the level of cleaning and care that you provide (see above). As general rule of thumb, if the comfort padding or synthetic padding shows signs of wear and/or feels loose in any way, or the exterior surface exhibits any signs of deterioration or damage, it is time to get yourself to a new helmet.
13: What is the warranty like?
All PHX helmets come with a standard one-year warranty from date of purchase to protect against all manufacturing defects. To exercise the warranty you must have proof of purchase.
14: How do I properly attach and close my shield so that it stays closed?
The most common reason a shield will not stay closed or will not close properly is because the shield has been removed, changed or otherwise altered and re-installed incorrectly. If the shield tab is under the shield channel on the base plate then this is the case. To correct this, simply re-install the shield so that it is even on both sides and sits along the channel.
If the tabs are under the channel on both sides then you may need to adjust the base plate itself. To do this, loosen the base plate screws on both sides and move them toward the back of the helmet (this will increase the tension between the shield and eyeports). Then re-tighten the screws when in the appropriate position, making sure not to tighten too hard. For detailed instructions see our shield removal section.
